Date: 2017-07-11

China's first set of national standards on English signage translation in the field of public service were jointly released by SAC and the Ministry of Education and the State Language Commission recently, aiming to ensure the high quality of English translation and writing of signages in the field of public service.

The standards include principles on the use of English - including translations from Chinese - in 13 public sectors, including transportation, tourism, entertainment, sports and education, providing more than 3,500 regulated English translations for commonly used public service information.

"Standardization in English translation in the public service is essential for us to promote opening-up at a higher level and improve China's international image, it is an important embodiment of improving our public services and governance capacity as well", SAC Administrator Tian Shihong said. This set of standards will be implemented on December 1.
