Standardization is not as simple as you think
CPPCC members experienced standards at laboratories of CNIS

On the occasion of the National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference 2017, the International Woman's Day was approaching,  Changping Experimental Base of CNIS welcome some special guests, Chen Shuang, the Deputy Director of Haidian District of Beijing, Liu Ke, Ding Zhiming, Hu Shuyan, Vice-Chairs of the CPPCC of Haidian District, Yang Jianfei, the Secretary-General of CPPCC of Haidian District as well as over 30 female members of CPPCC of Haidian District.

Many guests had never realized that standards could be perceived, and sensory index was based on quantification before they came to experimental base. At Food Sensory Analysis Laboratory, they learned that the index of food sensory is determined by the sensory characteristics evaluation and the consuming preference test. And the index of food sensory evaluation can not only be qualitative but quantitative with the support of big data.

The longer we play phones and computers or work and study under the light, the more serious eye fatigue we will suffer from. One of the reasons is that blue-ray damages vision ability. At Visual Health and Eye&Face Protection Laboratory, the guests were told that the protection standards of blue-ray developed independently by CNIS not only had applied for national standards but also stepped into the CD stage of  International Semiconductor Industry Association. Once those series of blue-ray achievements are applied to phones, computer screens and lighting equipment, it will be great helpful for consumers' visual health.

At Human Body Measurement Laboratory, they learned that the data of human body measurement could provide basis for clothing, shoes and hats, students desks & chairs, furniture, cars, airplane cockpits and seats designs. But they did not know that this database also offered data support for aerospace equipment, army weapons and equipment, and customized military uniform. For example, in the study of body measurement of female astronauts in 2010, the database provided data support for improving the design of spacesuits and space cabin aiming at the female physiological characteristics. They watched with interest human body dimensions scanning by 3D scan technology.

At the Product Defective Analysis Laboratory, they were told that it was the evidence the laboratory offered that defective products of international famous brands had to be recalled in China. And at Energy. At Water Efficiency Laboratory, they took out their phones to scan two-dimensional code on household appliances which carried a number of information of energy efficiency and product, or even maintenance orders can also be achieved through the mobile phone. In particular, they were pleased that, under the support of a large number of experimental data and research achievements of the laboratory, China will carry out water efficiency labeling by which consumers can purchase water-saving products then.

"As a major part of NQI (National Quality Infrastructure), standards filter into everywhere of our lives, act as a support and leader in the future development of China. Standardization is not a simple work. The revision and evaluation of a standard need a profound study, complicated experimental confirmation and support of powerful databases." commented Hu Shuyan, Vice-Chair of the CPPCC of Haidian District, Beijing. She added that "CPPCC members need strongly back the standardization work, make standards proposals when it is necessary and play our role in promoting standardization work."
