Key areas of research and scope of work:

Research on Policies and standards of GI protection: including research on GI protection system and its supervising and management system; investigation and research on the categories of GIs and the potential resources endowed in these products; research on economic values and market evaluations of GIs; research on competitiveness of GIs and approaches to build world famous brands; research on the relationship between characteristics of GIs and the environmental factors of its origin; research on feature-evaluation methods for GIs and methods to control their quality and to establish the standard system for GI protection.

Researches on protection of intellectual properties rights and information technologies for GIs: research on the pattern to combine the protection of intellectual properties rights of GIs with GI system and standards; research on means and techniques for protection of the intellectual property rights of GIs; research on tracing techniques of GIs' quality and establishment of a database for GI protection based on Geographical Informational Systems (GIS).

Serving as the representative office of Organization for an International Geographical Indications Network in China (OriGIn). The institute is in charge of the following tasks: conducting related activities in China on behalf of OriGIn, enrollment of new members, setting up an OriGIn website in China, participating in activities held by OriGIn on the international level, introduction to its nation and its people developments of international GI protection, promoting Chinese GIs world-widely and enhancing communication and information exchange between Chinese GI producers and international institutions and entities.

Provide consulting service on GI protection information and standards;


Assiste the Department of Science and Technology of AQSIQ in archive technical specifications of GIs.
