With accelerated development of international standardization in China, research on international standardization has become an important means for understanding of the status quo of international standardization and prediction on its trend of development, and it is a key support for realization of the objective of development of international standardization in China. From international, regional and national perspectives, the Institute of Standardization Theories and Strategies of CNIS undertakes extensive, comprehensive and in-depth research on the standardization strategies, policies and theories of international and regional standardization organizations and governments and standardization organizations of different countries. Based on this, it explores the strategies and policies of international standardization in China, and finally provides all-round support for development of international standardization policies by the government and determination of enterprise international standardization strategies.
The field of international standardization mainly covers the following five areas of research:
1. Research on international standardization strategies and policies
Extensive and in-depth research on the development strategies and policies (drafting and revision of standards, management policies for technical organizations, intellectual property right policies, etc.) of international standardization organizations (ISO, IEC, ITU, etc.) regional standardization organizations (CEN, PASC, etc.), major national standardization organizations (BSI, DIN, ANSI, etc.) and other regional standardization organizations (ASTM, W3C, IETF, etc.).
2. Research on the latest developments of international standardization
Tracking and analysis of the latest developments of international standardization home and abroad and publication of Latest Developments of International Standardization (monthly). It is preparing for publication of Research Reports on Development of International Standardization.
3. Research on impact of standards on international trade
 Theoretical and positivistic research on the mechanism of impact of standards on bilateral trade between China and other countries and the global trade, and the policy measures China should take.
4. Research on international standardization development strategies and policies and measures of China
Research and development of China's international standardization strategies and policies and measures (international standards tracking policies, strategies for determination of international standards of China's advantage fields, etc.) China should take to involve in international standardization activities.
5. Research on technical trade measures and foreign technical laws and regulations
Research on standards-related technical trade measures and the technical laws and regulation systems of countries and regions including the U.S. and the EU.
