Main areas of research and scope of work:
Research on food quality and safety standardization: including food standardization theory and national standards framework, fundamental food standards and international standardization, food safety control & management standardization, food safety laws & regulations, and food safety supervision & management system;
Research on safety risk alert and emergency handling standardization: including food safety risk surveillance and early warning technology standardization, food safety emergency handling standardization, and food traceability and call-back technology standardization;
Research on food sensory analysis standardization: including basic theories and methodology of food sensory analysis, informatization and intelligent food sensory analysis and research on food consumption preferences;
Research on agricultural standardization: including fundamental and comprehensive agricultural standardization, agricultural products quality and safety control and management standardization, and agricultural products quality grading system standardization;
Research on Standardization of Geographic Indications(GIs) Protection: including research on the framework of policies and standards of GIs protection, information technology for GIs protection and intellectual property right protection;
Serving as the Secretariat of the Technical Committee of Food Safety Management Technology Standardization; the Secretariat of the National Working Group on Standardization of Emergency Handling for Food Safety; the Secretariat of AQSIQ Research Working Group on Codex Alimentarius (CAC), and the Secretariat of Technical Committee of National Sensory Food Analysis Standardization;
Serving as the secretariat for China representative organization for ISO/TC 34 and ISO/TC34/SC12;
Establishment and maintenance of the Rapid Alert & Response System for Food Safety (RARSFS) and the Risk Monitoring System for Food Production (RMSFP) for AQSIQ, and preparation for the Food Safety Risk Alert and Information Center;
Establishment and maintenance of the Food and Agricultural Standards Database, providing consulting service and training for food and agricultural standardization;
Establishing of the Sensory Food Analysis Lab of China National Institute of Standardization to provide external technical service for sensory food analysis;
Representative office of International Geographical Indications Network (OriGIn) in China, to provide Foreign Service of standardization and information of GIs protection products.
Main research achievements:
Accomplishment of one project (Basic Study on Major Standards on Food Safety and Technical Trade Barriers), two sub-projects (Standards System of Agricultural Products Processing and System and Standards of Geographical Indications Protection) of the Ten-Five Year Plan Period National Science & Technology Projects “Key Technologies on Food Safety” supported by MOST;
Hosting three projects (Food Safety Risk Analysis Research and Its Application Guide Development, Standards System of Food Package Container & Substances, Key Technology Study and Standard Development of Food Sensory Analysis) of the Ten-Five Year Plan Period Key Technologies R&D Program “Key Technologies on Food Safety” and “Key Technical Standards Promotion Project” supported by MOST;
Hosting Development of Rapid Agri-Product Quality Traceability System and its operation specification, a project of “National High-tech Research and Development Plan (863)” in the 11th Five-Year Plan Period supported by MOST;
Accomplishment of more than 30 projects supported by MOST, AQSIQ, SAC, etc, including Establishment and Improvement of Food Standards System, Grading and Classification of Major Agricultural Products, and Economic Evaluation of Geographical Indications and Its Role in Promoting Rural Economy;
Accomplishment of Establishment of Food Call-back System in China, an international project funded by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada;
Drafting and revision of more than 50 comprehensive national standards on food and agriculture, including basic food standards, food safety risk analysis and emergency standards, agri-products labeling and grading standards and food sensory analysis standards;
Development of databases for: food safety standards and agri-product processing standards to meet demands for food standards, technical regulations and restrictions on harmful and toxic substances home and abroad. Establishment of China Food Standardization Network (www.cfs.net.cn);
Development of the Rapid Alert & Response System for Food Safety (RARSFS) and the Risk Monitoring System for Food Production (RMSFP), periodically submitting the Assessment Report on China Food Safety Status to relevant government organizations;
Publication of more than ten textbooks for standardization training and implementation, including Food Standardization, Basic Knowledge on Quality and Safety of Food and Cosmetics, Standardization Guide for Small Food Enterprises, Understanding and Implementation of GB/T22000-2006 Food Safety Management Systems- Requirements for All Organizations in the Food Chain. Publication of more than 30 articles in key journals;
Hosting of ISO/TC34/SC12 Sensory Analysis 20th Subcommittee Meeting to highlight the role of China in ISO/TC34 and to promote the development of sensory food analysis standardization in China.
