Institute of Standardization Theories and Strategies
TIME:2007.10.15

Established in June 2003, the Institute of Standardization Theories and Strategies is a key research institution in the field of standardization theories, strategies and policy in China. Its establishment reflects the demand of social and economic development for macro-research and theoretical research on standardization and the increased attention of the authorities to standardization strategies and theories. It also symbolizes a new stage of scientific research at CNIS.
The Institute is currently focusing on four research fields, namely, standardization theories and laws and regulations, international standardization, public security standardization, city guidance and graphical symbol standardization. It is serving as the Secretariat of the National Technical Committee 59 on Graphical Symbols of Standardization Administration of China (SAC/TC 59) (mirroring the Committee of ISO/TC 145) and the National Technical Committee 286 on Standardization Principles and Methods of SAC (SAC/TC 286) (liaison and coordination with TAG for Directives, and Guides of ISO/TMB). At the moment, the Institute is preparing for the establishment of the National Technical Committee on Fundamental Standards of Public Security for Standardization Administration of China (mirroring public security of ISO/TC 223 and ISO/TMB SAG-S). It is also serving as the convener and the secretariat of ISO/TC 145/SC1/WG5. Corresponding international standards are under drafting at the Institute.
As a result of its efforts over the years, the Institute has won numerous prizes including: a state-level 2nd Prize for Advancement of Science &Technology, one 1st, one 2nd and one 3rd prizes of AQSIQ for Application of Science & Technology in Inspection and Quarantine; one 3rd prize for Standardization Innovation, two 4th Prizes of CSBTS (China State Bureau of Quality and Supervision) for Advancement of Science & Technology.
The Institute has 20 staff researchers with Ph.D degrees or Master degrees in fields including management science, economics, psychology and computer science and public security and rich research experience in the field of standardization. The multi-disciplinary and composite research team is doing research in diversified areas of research.
Most research results of the Institute have become the foundation for determination of China's national strategic standardization programs and guidelines and policies. They provide strong technical support for standardization administration by the Chinese government and sound theoretical support for development of standards and standardization in China. The national standards of directives and guidance drafted and revised by the Institute have become the guidelines for supervision of standardization in China and they are referenced by laws and regulations of the country in the field of standardization. The increasingly systematic and in-depth research and development of standards for city guidance and graphical symbols standardization will provide concrete technical support for municipal internationalization in China.
